What did you do with your Jacob’s biscuits tins after finishing the
biscuits? To hide treasures? To make lanterns? Or as a flower pot?
I pretty believe most of us do have some childhood experience playing
around with the Jacob’s tin. Where the story can start from a kid to an adult.
The childhood memory is still exists vividly on my mind, where we use the steel
cover of the Jacob’s tin to be a cooking pan for us to play “masak-masak”, also
known as cooking games among kids. Where we put the cover on top of two bricks
and lit a candle in between of the bricks, with the cover of the Jacob’s tin as
a cooking pan.
Another usage of the Jacob’s tin is, we used to make a few centimeters
rectangle hole in the middle of the tin cover so that we can drop the coins in
it, which used to be a DIY piggy bank (though it’s way different from the look of
a piggy). This idea is also often used in most movie scene, where usually the
80’s or 90’s characters in the movie will keep their savings in the tin and
hide underneath the bed or somewhere else.
The story can also start from a Chinese New Year festival, where it is a
traditional that most of the Chinese of prepared various types of homemade
biscuits and one of the famous biscuit is “Kuih Carpet”, which is some sort of
egg roll biscuits in triangular shape. For the old times, where my family often
prepared the baked “Kuih Carpet” biscuits in Jacob’s tin, but nowadays it
started to be replaced by an empty transparent plastic box.
